We never take it for granted when people open up and share their stories with us. It takes courage and trust.
As our team sits and reflects on our third Lonestar Emmy Award win at 1708 Media, I’m not sure we’ve ever felt more responsibility to do right by our subjects than with this feature on Tatyanna Bailey.
Taty, a guard on the Hendrickson High School basketball team, started noticing a difference in her gait as she prepared for her junior season. The initial thought was drop foot — but as other ailments began to pop up, a trip to the doctor revealed the unimaginable: A brain tumor. Taty underwent a procedure to remove most of the tumor, and amazingly, returned to the court later that year — hitting multiple 3’s in her first game back. Optimism brimmed as she looked forward to her senior campaign. But the symptoms returned. The tumor was back and was spreading throughout her body. There was nothing the doctors could do.
Tatyanna Bailey passed away on August 18th, 2023.
Taty’s teammates dedicated the season to her, breaking down every huddle with “Missing Piece.” Coach Sierra and the team were kind to let us in to tell their story. Taty’s parents, Latraica and Johnny, beyond brave to open up to us— and trust us— to do right by their daughter.
