March Madness! It's all about the storytelling...

With March Madness tipping off, it's one of my favorite times of the year. Spring (at least in Texas) is upon us and college basketball will dominate the television for the next several weeks. Who will be this year's Cinderella story, captivating America's attention?

Cinderella stories capture people's attention in the NCAA Tournament every year.

I love basketball - so it's hard not to get me to tune into March Madness. But, why do more than 10 million people watch the average NCAA Tournament game?! And why do estimates suggest more than 60 million people fill out NCAA Tournament brackets?! It's not the basketball ... it's the stories!

Good stories matter and will always capture people's attention. Sure, UConn plays amazing basketball. But the casual fan falls in love with the Cinderella story, like 11th seed Loyola Chicago in 2018 and Sister Jean (remember her?!), or UMBC becoming the first 16 seed to ever beat a 1 seed in 2018 when the Retrievers beat Virginia.

Guess what? Storytelling matters in video marketing too. Finding a creative and compelling way to tell your story might be the most important part of any video you produce. We're served so much content every day, it's easy to tune things out, but a good story will always grab people's attention. And that's the goal of any video! Make someone pay attention and want to learn more about you and/or your business.

Great storytelling creates an emotional connection with your audience.

Certainly someone who is intimately invested in your brand will be interested no matter what. But what about the casual observer? You've got to hook them. And you've only got a few seconds to do it. Why are you different? Why should someone spend time watching your video? Chances are other companies sell the same product as you, or offer the same service, but what's the story behind your brand?

Whenever we begin a video project, we always ask our client during the discovery phase: What makes you unique? What are 2-3 pillars we can build your video around? With storytelling, less is often more.

Effective storytelling will create an emotional connection with the viewer. It will make them feel something and want to share your story. It also makes you more memorable. A good story is so much easier to remember than numbers or stats about your product. If the story hooks them, they'll take the time to figure out the data. Your story is what is going to differentiate you from the competitors in the market.

Storytelling is the foundation of everything we do at 1708 Media. After decades of telling stories for television stations, it remains our passion. How can we tell your story? We'd love to chat and learn more about your brand.

Enjoy the March Madness and the amazing stories waiting to be told!
