Why Pre-Production and Storyboarding Matter

You've decided it's time to produce professional video content for your company and you can't wait to get started. Understandable - shoot days are always our favorite days, too. But, pump the brakes! Before shooting even begins and lays the groundwork for how we will communicate with your target audience, it's essential that you spend time working with your video partner in pre-production to ensure a successful production process. Investing time on the front end of your project will save you time (and money!) in the long run.

Here are five reasons why devoting time to pre-production will guarantee greater success for your video project:

Having a frame by frame storyboard in place will make for a more efficient production and post-production process.

  1. Define the vision: During planning meetings with your production partner, you can spend time reviewing examples, identifying things you like and dislike and establishing the tone and message you want for your video(s). This lets you have an active voice in your project before shooting even begins.

  2. Storyboarding: Once you've defined your goals and messaging, your production team will produce a storyboard. This will help you visualize what shots and scenes you are going to capture on shoot day and the look and feel of any potential interviews. A storyboard helps eliminate surprises on shoot day and allows you to refine anything you may not like before the cameras roll.

  3. Time Management: With a proper storyboard in place, your production team will be far more efficient on shoot day. They'll know exactly which scenes and shots you need to capture, and can minimize the disruption to your (and your team's) work day. You'll also have a detailed production day schedule - broken down hourly, so you can arrange the day accordingly.

  4. Save Money: Investing time in pre-production will save you money in the long run. Production day(s) will often be shorter and more efficient and with a proper storyboard/script in place, the post-production process will also be easier, as your production partner will have a plan in place to follow once editing begins. Since you have a plan in place, you also reduce the chances of missing something on shoot day and potentially needing to pay for additional production time.

  5. Quicker Delivery and Project Completion: Because you spent the time storyboarding your project and clearly defining your messages and goals, you'll have a good idea what to expect before your production team delivers the first draft of the video to you. This will make the revision process simpler and quicker. Rather than needing significant re-edits and extending the revisions timeline, you'll have the final video(s) in hand ready to use as soon as possible.
